Why do we need to lift our feet?
Lifting your legs is an exercise that is very beneficial for your health. Plus, it’s so simple to make that it only takes about 20 minutes of your day.
Our heart works hard to get blood to every part of our body. This effort is greater in the legs due to gravity, but can also be influenced by other factors such as obesity and overweight.
If you suffer from chronic venous insufficiency (IVC), you’ll know that some of the symptoms include varicose veins, cramping, and tired legs.
For this reason, one tip often given to IVC sufferers is to elevate their legs above heart level for a few minutes each day. While there is no definitive evidence to support these claims, we have come across several studies that seem quite promising.
On the other hand, if your job or lifestyle requires you to spend a lot of time on your feet or sitting in the same position, there is no harm in doing these simple exercises to rest your feet and improve circulation.
What does this leg lift exercise consist of?
It’s not exactly exercise because it doesn’t involve physical exertion or muscle tension. In fact, it is more like a yoga pose. Yoga is often used to create a greater connection between mind and body and improves circulation.
However, this method is not recommended if you have any type of back injury. Here’s the best way to do it:
First, put a small pillow on your back to help you achieve a more balanced position. This allows you to keep your feet against the wall and your arms outstretched and in a completely vertical position.
Now all you have to do is keep this position for at least 15-20 minutes. You don’t need to do anything else. Just try to feel the balance in your body and feel the improved blood flow in your head and chest.
When doing this, it is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing that does not constrict the waist or ankles. Conversely, clothing that is too tight may hinder the goal of this exercise, which is to improve blood circulation.
- Reduces fluid accumulation in legs and feet
Poor circulation is one of the main causes of fluid accumulation in the legs and feet. Symptoms include swelling, heaviness, tight socks, and reduced flexibility in joints such as ankles.
Sometimes this complication is caused by various imbalances: kidney problems, heart problems, excess weight, the effects of certain medications, or improper diet.
Elevating your legs helps counteract anything that impairs circulation and relieves associated symptoms.
